Inner Trauma Reviews
Metalzine
oídos a esta nueva gema del thrash metal brasileño;
tema. No apto para corazones sensibles. Fasthrash Alive.
Metal
Invader (Greece/Grécia) - Attention all thrashers!
This review is totally for you! This goddamned CD is fucking devastating.
My entusiasm is huge, because this band came from nowhere for
me, it is definitely a surprise. I didn't know it and how much
I blame myself for that. This Brazilian quartet begun its career
many years ago and "Inner Trauma" is their fourth release
so far. Their call their music "fasthrash" and believe
me they are completely right. 14 tracks (I have the Marquee edition
with one bonus song, I don't really know how many tracks the Mausoleum
edition contains) all full of energy, aggression, speed and respect
for their influences, witch are of course SEPULTURA and SLAYER.
Imagine the ripping Slayer riffs with the attitude and the felling
of "Beneath The Remains" and "Arise" and you
have the answer. The production is exactly what real thrash metal
album needs, and contributes a lot in the final outcome. An album
right through the late 80's - early 90's thrash metal scene. Okay,
ANDRALLS with "Inner Trauma" don't offer us something
groundbreaking but as a fanatic thrash fan I really don't give
a shit! I am cause it's played with enthusiasm passion and the
most important thing, guts! ANDRALLS is a must have for all the
thrash maniacs and this album is the evidence. Stay Fasthrash!
Metaleater
(Canada/Canadá) - SEPULTURA, KRISIUN, ADAGIO,
SARCOFAGO, ANGRA...Add ANDRALLS to the list of quality metal bands
calling Brazil home! Formed in 1998, ANDRALLS (Alex Coelho - Guitar
and Vocals, Denis Di Lallo - Guitar, Eddie C. – Bass, and
Alexandre Brito – Drums) recently released their third full-length
release. The band refers to their brand of metal as "Fasthrash",
so you immediately get an idea of what to expect. ANDRALLS have
a strong following in their native Brazil and have supported the
likes of EXODUS, JUDAS PRIEST, and MALEVOLENT CREATION there.
Inner Trauma" clocks in at 46 minutes of relentless metallic
attack, opening with a brief intro followed by a barrage of 13
songs about war and world turmoil. With aggressive riffs, relentless
drumming, and frenzied fretwork, I cannot think of any other band
currently mastering the 80's thrash sound like ANDRALLS. Sure,
other thrash bands have recently made admirable attempts to return
to their roots, but this band has yet to stray. Powerful drumming
and a big double-bass sound are highlighted in "Down The
Jokers" and "Non-Shooting War". Swift fretwork
is showcased on "Fear Is My Ally", "Unconscious
Choice" with its solo-intro, and "Awake And Dead"
with its guitar-only parts and stop-start drumming. The SEPULTURA
influence is undeniable, mostly due to the two Alex's guttural
bark, which mimics early Max Cavalera. The guitar tone could very
well have been copied to imitate that of the "Chaos A.D."
recording sessions. However, today ANDRALLS are more than a few
rungs above SEPULTURA on the thrash ladder. There are also some
SLAYER influences, most noticeably in the frenzied guitar solos
that are often suggestive of the King/Hanneman team. In addition,
there are a few occasions when BIOHAZARD-style chants can be heard
("Subhuman Worms" and "Developed Underground").
This is the in-your-face, riff-based thrash I grew up on, and
love to this day. The production is outstanding and nicely balances
all instruments with the lead and backing vocals. The bass drums
hit hard and tight, and the guitars follow with a smack of their
own. A suggestion: Play on 10! ANDRALLS are an incredible band
deserving of greater recognition, and with proper promotion and
exposure, ANDRALLS' stock in the Brazilian (and world) metal market
will continue to climb. There's a new leader in Brazilian thrash!
Seek out this band and album before you feel embarrassed to say
you've never heard of
them.
Whiplash
Old School remetendo diretamente ao SLAYER e SEPULTURA fase "Beneath
merecem destaque: "Fear is my Ally", "Down the
Jokers", "Unconscious Choice" e "Subhuman
Worms", verdadeiras pancadarias fasthrasheadas deste trabalho
Rockmatrix
(UK/Reino Unido) - Brazillian four piece 'Andralls' are
a ferocious aural assault in the same vein as early Sepultura,
Slayer and Brujeria. Frantic guitar, punishing druming, frayed
vocal-chord screaming vocals, everything a future great of the
thrash genre should have; forced into a murderous sounding, South
American barrage of guitar fuelled hatred. Inner Trauma is the
2004 release from Mausoleum records that will forge them a place
in the Thrash hall of fame. I don't know which words to use to
describe these guys for you all, Brutal doesn't do them justice
and Fearsome seems tame by comparison. This is the kind of band
you go and see making sure you are wearing full tactical body
armour just to insure you come out of the venue
with all appendages still attatched, I hope they visit our dreary
shores some time soon, i've just ordered my suit of body armour
and am itching to see if it works.
Music
Extreme (Argentina)- Andralls is with no doubt one of
the most powerful bands from South America. Their music is thrash
metal with some death metal elements but with strong eighties
influences and a really modern sound. Here we have a recording
where each guitar riff is created to destroy the listener. Fast
rhythms are all over the place here without reaching blast beats
but always keeping an emphasis in the heaviness of the rhythms
with strong use of double bass. But the main thing here are the
loud guitars which have a crushing sound making each song an experience
in heaviness. The vocals are of the extreme type needed in this
style of crushing thrash metal. I have to remark the good sound
that this recording has that makes the overall result more direct
and crushing. A devastating thunder coming directly from Brazil.
Hellride
Music - Son of a goddamn bitch!!!!! This is how fucking
thrash is done! The dystopian, cartoonish cover art; lyrics lashing
out at the cut-throat capitalists, pilfering politicians and warped
warmongers wiping their asses with one hundred dollar bills and
sending the world straight down Lucifer’s loo; and song
after song that makes you want to dive head first through a window,
punch holes in pavement, uproot trees, and overturn cars. Fuck!!!!
Inner
Trauma is Sao Paulo’s Andralls (your guess is as good as
mine) third full-length album, and the band has managed to recreate
a spirited style of thrash that should make heads furiously bang
from Fortaleza to Fort Wayne. But Andralls is a virtual unknown
above the Rio Grande since there is no distribution deal for the
States and information on the band is scarce, a strange situation,
because Andralls should be blasting out from the rooftops of every
building where metalheads congregate. Anyway,
Andralls call their music “fasthrash,” and they tell
no lies. The RPMs remain in the red for almost the entire playing
time of Inner Trauma—the band only slows down to churn out
some abrupt, abrasive, stop-and-go stuttering or to grind out
a lumbering, roiling, gravid thunderhead that serves as a short
warning for the pelting, punishing and fast-moving riffstorm that
follows.Of
course, it is de rigueur (the album title that instantly brings
“Inner Self” to mind does not help matters) to immediately
trot out the Sepultura references when the words “thrash”
and “Brazil” come within one mile of each another,
and there are certainly some similarities between Andralls and
the most successful metal band to emerge from the land of favelas
and futebol. Vocalist/Guitarist Alex Coelho spits out the lyrics
in a gruff and brusque manner that sounds eerily like a young
Max Cavalera at times and represents the firmest common ground
both bands share. There are also a handful of moments where echoes
of “Dead Embryonic Cells” or “Stronger than
Hate” drift through the thickets of riffs, compelling reviewers
to tag Andralls as the modern-day equivalent of Sepultura. This
musical and national pigeonholing, however, is misleading and
deceptive on numerous levels. Coelho vocals, for example, could
as easily be described as a mixture of the gutturally articulate
approaches of Overdose’s Baza and Gordo from Ratos de Porao,
but such observations are hair-splitting exercises and not where
the significant differences are found.The
thrash Andralls composes has much more in common with the state
of California than the state of Sao Paulo and its linage is a
complex kaleidoscopic collage. Andralls make no secret of their
reverent and referential stances toward American thrash of the
1980s, and they have raised raiding the archives into an art form
that places them in a class of their own. Coelho and Di Lallo,
the second arm of the band’s guitar tandem, peel off solos
that are firmly rooted in the Hunlot/Holt and Hanneman/King school
of string scorching—doing an admirable job of mimicking
the masters. And, in lieu of a thorough discussion of the manifold
influences Andralls draw on to fashion their multifaceted thrash
attack. Other
thrash gastronomists may discern different flavors and choose
to modify the instructions to suit their particular tastes, but
the end result will be the same—a heady thrashing stew aged
to golden perfection that will energize and enthuse anyone who
consumes it. Inner Trauma, however, is more than a romping retro
ride down memory lane, a derivative novelty worth a few fun-filled
spins, or a past-plundering platter that induces a round of nostalgic
nodding. Andralls has not merely aped the sounds of the bands
they worship, but directly tapped into the ineffable spirit that
made eighties thrash a monumental genre difficult to reinvigorate.
Many current thrash bands (retro, reformed, or modern) have delivered
excellent albums over the past few years, yet there is always
the nagging sense that there is a spark missing that keeps these
bands from rekindling the intensity of the old-school thrash bonfire.
Certainly, some have come near enough to create modern-era masterpieces,
but the qualifier “close” is inevitably applied when
discussing the high standards set by the classics. But Andralls
has squeaked over the high bar the albums of yesteryear have erected
by resurrecting the more intangible aspects of thrash that have
been dormant for quite some time. The riffs on Inner Trauma are
vehemently violent and vibrant, falling from the instruments like
leaves from a diseased, dying tree. In almost each and every song,
there are multiple ripping riffs that whipsaw the listener back
and forth between awe and admiration as Andralls raises and brings
down a thrashing sledgehammer again and again. This sustained
assault and the successive counts of aural battery contained in
each tune would be enough to make the album a keeper, but the
expert placement of the songs and the evolutionary vim and vigor
of the riffs make it an unexpected gem.Overall, the tracks on
Inner Trauma are perfectly arranged, producing the peaks, valleys,
lulls, and outbreaks that make the listener feel as if he has
sat through a barnburner of a thrash album that has a logical
entrance and exit. The songs themselves are built on numerous
progressive riffs that ratchet up the ambiance of restlessness
to a fever pitch and then deliver the unforeseen yet expected
thrash breakdowns—which hit like an 18 wheeler full of ball
bearings that has crossed into an oncoming lane full of rush hour
traffic. In the end, however, the defining characteristics of
Inner Trauma stem from two interrelated facts: Andralls possesses
impeccable timing and a visceral, instinctual understanding of
thrash atmospherics—aggressive attributes that lead to an
album where the driving double bass drumming; harsh grunts and
growls; brief moments of bass soloing; and tearing-ass guitar
tangents symbiotically feed off of one another to create a comprehensive
cranium-cracking experience.They just don’t make ‘em
like this anymore. Incredible, phenomenal, and absolutely essential
if the terms “heavy” and “metal” are indispensable
entries in your musical lexicon, because this album is hands down
the best thrash released since the early nineties. The bottom
line: Andralls fucking rules and Inner Trauma is just pure and
simple fucking devastation!
Metalglory
Eingedenk des 2003er-Hammers ???Force Against Mind“, welcher
???Down The Jokers’ zu erkennen, wo die Herren vom Zuckerhut
(tolles Riff), ???Subhuman Worms’ (flotter klassischer Hauruck-Kracher)
gelingen. Thrash till Thrash can !!! 8 ½ Punkte.
Roadie
is my Ally.
Demais
destaques: Down the Jokers, The Age of Rage, Awake and Dead, Non-Shooting
Inner Trauma
é mais um 'Fasthrash Explícito'.
Rock
Brigade (Brazil/Brasil) - O thrash metal nacional continua
Já Subhuman Worms e Fear is my Ally têm
My
heraus brachten.
verpackt. Musikalisch wird lupenreinster Thrash abgeliefert. Und
das auch noch verdammt schnell. Dementsprechend bezeichnen Andralls
ihre Musik auch als Fast - Thrash. Mann, die gehen ganz schön
nach vorne. Freunde des Thrash und Freunde des Speed Metal werden
also gleichermaßen bedient.
CW
Reviews - Formed in 1998, this Brazilian foursome took
to the studio within their first year to record the privately
released 10-track album "Massacre, Corruption, Destruction".
Musical style? Melodic but brutal SpeedThrash! Favourable response
from national media encouraged the band to prepare recordings
for a follow-up. But first the drum seat got another occupant
in the form of Xandao Brito, who comple(men)ted the band (further
comprised of singer/ guitarist Alex Coelho, guitarist Denis Di
Lallo, and bassist Eddie C.)perfectly. The band then set out on
a nationwide tour, which led to the band being invited to tour
yet again around Brazil with none less than Jusdas Priest. That,
in turn, led to the band being noticed by the Marquee label, who
signed the band in late 2002. Only a couple of months later (February
2003), the band's official debut album "Force Against Mind"
saw the light of day (re-released shortly after for the European
market by Mausoleum...with 3 bonus tracks)! That album again saw
the band touring their country, first as headliner, then as Brazilian
support for the tours of Malevolent Creation (September 2003)
and Exodus (August 2004). Meanwhile, the guys were working on
the new album we now have before us. Using Slayer-esque Speedy
Thrash (which the guys themselves call 'FastThrash'), this band
has deservedly been called 'Sepultura of the new millenium'. Of
course, the comparison mainly goes for a Sepultura of the early
days, of albums such as "Schizophrenia", "Beneath
The Remains", and "Arise", but...a first confrontation
with these continuously raging tracks may be a bit overwhelming
indeed! Luckily, the Slayer influences are a bit more apparent
this time around, and the beginning melody of the song "Awake
And Dead" being stolen (ooh, that's actually nót so
positive, is it?) works out as a recognizable point (of course,
they've sped up the melody somewhat). Our European copy not only
has one bonus track, but also a second one, hidden at that! With
a total playing time of 46 minutes and a half, I'm sure the die-hard
Thrashers are simply gonna have a ball with this album!
Bright
Eyes (Germany/Alemanha) - Das letzte ANDRALLS-Album ???Force
Dementsprechend hoch waren meine Erwartungen
dadurch a bisserl an Power.
Lords
of Metal (Netherlands/Holanda) - Andralls are from Brazil
and as far as I know 'Inner Trauma' is the third album of the
foursome. It is my first encounter with the outfit though. It
turns out to be an album that does not need many words to describe
it properly, without doing them wrong, that is. Fast, classic
thrash metal releasing smoking energy. It cannot be a coincidence
that the Sepultura influences are obvious here. 'Inner Trauma'
could have been the successor to 'Beneath The Remains'. Singer/guitarist
Alex Coelho sounds like Cavalera, the songs are build up in a
similar way and I even think they took 'Beneath The Remains' as
a production reference. Is Andralls doing things different from
Sepultura? Well yes, they have a slightly more technical approach
and that makes me think of Dutch thrashers Sacrosanct (who remembers
that?) every now and then. Good album that releases a huge amount
of energy but lacks a face of it's own.
Voices
from the Dark Side - Since their fantastic debut album
"Massacre, Corruption, Destruction" in 2000 these four
maniacs has kept the banner of violent Thrash Metal high. Founded
1998 in Sao Paulo ANDRALLS releases with "Inner Trauma"
on Marquee Records already their third studio album (there's also
a live album entitled "Fastrash Live 2003") and they
can be considered as one of the inheritors of the Brazilian Thrash
tradtition. On this new output you will get 14 furious, fast and
technical brillant tunes (the Brazilian edition I got here features
an exclusive bonus track 'Terror Ferus' which will be on this
one only) played with total passion and they take no prisoners.
That's how Thrash Metal must sound today! Razorsharp riffs, violent
speed, crushing mid tempo parts and totally insane solos and leads.
This is pure oldschool, pure adrenaline which breathes nothing
else than pure Metal. You really can feel the old spirit with
every single note and it's only a pleasure to listen to this infernal
storm. The production of the album is flawless. Total powerfull
and like the famous slap into your face. I don't want to pick
out a single track here as the whole album offers no weak points.
The packaging is again excellent and everyone who is serious into
oldschool or high quality Thrash Metal should immediately get
a copy of this intense assault at www.marquee.com.br. For further
information about the band just have a look at www.andralls.com.br.
To finish with the band's slogan: "Stay Fastrash!!"
Powermetal
(Germany/Alemanha) - Die brasilianische Thrash-Metal-Maschine
Dazu
Max Cavalera. ANDRALLS transportieren mit Stücken wie 'Down
The Jokers' oder 'Hidden Enemies' all das, wofür Thrash Metal
Stück ist 'The Age Of Rage' mit seinem prägnanten, kurzen
'Awake And Dead' ist langsamer,
Get
Ready to Rock - This lot admit that they set out to play
classic 80's thrash as aggresively as they possibly could. That
is what this mad batch of Brazillians have done. And rather than
apeing the most famous Brazilian metal outfit, Sepultura, with
their tribal earthy vibe, this lot have gone for a more trad thrash
sound. It's fast furious and heavy as hell, with serious shreding
on tracks like 'The Age of Rage'. Naturally the drumming is impressive,
with Bostaph levels of intensity. Alex Coellho growls with the
best of them. This is an awesome collection of thrash that will
please even the pickiest of the genre's fans. It is no shock at
all that they have toured with Judas Priest, Exodus and Malevolent
Creation. Mausoleum have in this band some true thrash talent.
I challenge you not to head-bang to this disc, its like the 80's
thrash scene all over again. Great stuff...and I am betting they
are absolutely mental live.
Metal
UK (UK/Reino Unido) - Formed in 1998, in Brazil, this
is the third album from Andralls, and continues their pursuit
of playing pure eighties-style thrash metal in fine fettle. It’s
fast, it’s thrashy and it’s
heavy, so consider their purpose achieved. Naturally, being Brazilian
everyone is going to use the name ‘Sepultura’
as a reference point, but it would be a misleading one, unless
you were familiar with the very early Brazilian only releases
of same, coming no further forward than “Beneath
The Remainsâ€. For like Sepultura, in those early
days, Andralls are firmly rooted in the music of their thrash
ancestors. And in these days of cross genres and pollination,
it’s no bad thing to hear a band who knows
what they like and do it well. They’re more
technically competent than some of their predecessors, and although
the production is a bit rough shod, I suspect that’s
deliberate. The energy level and attitude are impressive with
the guitars shredding, and the drums pounding. Alex Coellho does
his growl thing well, and we should expect nothing else on a classic
thrash album. They’ve already shared stages
with Judas Priest, Exodus and Malevolent Creation and I’m
sure they more than held their own, if the quality here is anything
to go by. If this had come out twenty years ago, it would have
been hailed as a classic. And even though they’re
doing nothing new, it is a remarkably potent release.
